Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport and the taxi industry turn to technology

05 jan

Québec City, January 5, 2018 – Starting in early January 2018, Aéroport de Québec inc. (AQi) and three taxi companies in Québec City (Taxi Laurier, Coop Taxi Sainte-Foy/Sillery, and Coop Taxi Québec 5191) will take part in a 30-day pilot project to test a computerized taxi management system at Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB).

The pilot project will test a new platform that will manage access and automate the process for picking up passengers leaving the airport. Following the example of traditional taxi ranks, AQi had a custom interface developed that can be fully integrated into the dispatch system already in use by 95% of taxis at the airport. Taxi drivers will be automatically added to a virtual queue when they arrive at the taxi parking lot and will be assigned a fare in the order they arrive.

“This new computerized solution will make life easier for taxi drivers, and passengers will get better service,” said Aéroport de Québec inc. president and CEO Gaëtan Gagné. “It will improve the flow of all ground transportation at YQB.”

Eventually taxi drivers will be able to see how many people need rides and how many taxis are available directly on their tablets so they can optimize their time and avoid unnecessary trips, thus providing better service for passengers. Drivers will not receive this information or notifications during the pilot project since the goal is to test the application in a closed circuit to make sure it works properly.

“This initiative will make serving the airport more appealing for taxi drivers,” said Abdallah Homsy, spokesperson for Regroupement des intermédiaires de taxi de Québec (RITQ). “Currently, drivers show up and have to wait hours to pick up a fare. This new process means supply will better match demand, especially during peak periods.”

If other taxi companies want to use this technology once the pilot project wraps up, all they will have to do is equip each vehicle with a smart tablet and install the Fraxion SIV system.
